Fair, Direct Trade

We use direct trade to cultivate long-term relationships with the farmers who grow Westrock Coffee.
This way, we are able to personally connect with farmers to offer higher compensation based on the coffee’s quality as well as training and educational opportunities. Through our Agribusiness Training Program, we are able to teach farmers improved agricultural practices in an environmentally and socially sustainable way. These partnerships provide opportunities for farmers and their families to have their basic necessities like education, access to clean water and healthcare fulfilled.

Linking Community To Community

Here at Westrock Coffee, our drive is to be a catalyst for real change in the lives of farmers and their families, through honest, direct trade with transparency at every stage in the supply chain, from crop to cup. The end result is strong, sustainable growth at origin and a quality product for our customers.

Why Rwanda

GROWING & HARVEST

With normal tools, the average farmer in East Africa can produce half a pound of green coffee per tree. We provide tools and training to farmers in an effort to double their yields on each tree, meaning better quality, more revenue and higher profits for farmers and their families.

WET MILL

Wet milling is the process of separating the cherry from the coffee bean and cleaning it. Proper wet-milling ensures that natural flavors are retained for true specialty grade coffee.

We take a holistic approach to partnership with farmers, providing special financing, market risk management, quality control and financial management training.

These efforts allow supported cooperatives and privately owned wet mills to increase the revenue for farmers and earn higher profits for their operations.

PROCESS & GRADE

The dry processing at our mills is a vital and complex link in the crop to cup process. This is where we remove the husk from the coffee, as well as identify and grade it according to our quality standards.

Without a strict level of quality control, great beans get mixed with the mediocre, thus making it impossible for roasters to reward top producers with the price incentives they deserve.

Our dry mill and grading facilities also act as invaluable intermediaries between roasters and producers, ensuring that contracts are fair and local customs are respected.

EXPORT

All of our coffee takes an important journey from our mills to export hubs a few days away in Kenya or Tanzania.

It’s during this time that our logistics team works tirelessly with drivers, freight forwarders and ports to ensure that our coffee is delivered to our customers in a timely fashion.

This may seem like an ordinary standard of doing business, but when we started our Rwanda Trading Company the single biggest complaint was late deliveries. Now, regardless of what continent our customers are located, our commitment is to deliver on time, every time.

ROASTING

We have a team of quality experts, quality graders and coffee cuppers who work with our roasters to create roast calculations that are unique to each varietal, work to develop unique blends and ensure consistency in every cup.

We roast a lot of coffee. We focus on honing our skill in roasting every single day. Each minute matters – too few or too many permanently alters the taste of the coffee.

After the roasting, we sample the coffee (again) before packaging it for our customers. Packaging ranges from small fractional packs used in food service to bags you see on the shelf to our single serve coffee.
