The coffee industry of Peru is one of the country’s most important agricultural sectors, accounting for 12% of all agricultural exports in 2004. Peru is also one of the largest producers of coffee in the world, with over 216 million kilograms exported each year.  These exports make Peru the ninth largest producer of coffee globally. Peru is also one of the largest producers of organic and fair trade coffee beans in world.

There are dry and rainy seasons throughout the year, permitting the regular blossoming and harvest of fresh coffee.

MAIN REGIONS:

Peru has at least 10 distinct growing regions, including Chanchamayo, Villa Rica, Piura, Quillabamba, and Tingo Maria.

TYPE OF COFFEE:

Arabica, the majority of Peru’s coffee is typica, accounting for 35%, while 25% is bourbon. Newer coffees include caturra and catimor.

ALTITUDE:

700 to 1,700 meters

HARVEST SEASON:

Peru’s harvest runs May through September, with the biggest months being June and July. Coffees typically arrive in the states through January.

Wet-processed, sun-dried
